Charity
The Youth Sport Trust (YST) is a registered charity which was
established by Sir John Beckwith in 1994 to build a brighter future
for young people by enhancing the quality of physical education
and sporting opportunities. Its mission is to develop and implement,
in close partnership with other organizations, quality physical
education and sports programmes for all young people aged
18 months to 18 years in schools
YST’s objectives are:
- to increase young people’s participation and enjoyment of PE and
school sport. - to give young people the chance to experience and enjoy different
types of activity at whatever level is right for them. - to ensure youngsters receive the best teaching, coaching and resources
possible and have the chance to progress if they show talent. - to help our young people to live healthy and active lives and to be the
best they can be.
YST’s objectives are achieved through the educational sporting
programmes that it produces. These are delivered through schools
and are supported by a range of corporate partners, trusts and
foundations and government departments.
Another important area of work is its support of Specialist Sports Colleges.
These designated sports-focused schools are at the hub of the government’s
strategy to enhance young people’s opportunities to participate in a wide
range of sports. They also raise the standards of teaching and learning in
PE and school sport, and across the curriculum. To assist Sports Colleges
in the achievement of these aims, YST provides them with a framework
of support and resources.
