Institute of Cancer Research

The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is Europe’s leading cancer research centre and one of the top four in the world. Its 800 scientists are based at laboratories in Chelsea and Sutton and have made many important breakthroughs, such as the discovery that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, and has isolated more cancer–related genes than any other organisation.

Over the next few years, high performance super–computing will become the driving force of cancer drug discovery. This is because a new era of cancer research is emerging that generates much larger sets of data than before. The Sir John Beckwith Charitable Trust will fund two of these supercomputers which will be operational in early 2011.
